Palliative Care provides a collection of services designed to meet the medical and emotional needs of seriously ill patient in order to relieve suffering and to improve the quality of life of patients. Team members address issues such as nausea and vomiting, pain, weakness, mental confusion, and other symptoms related to the disease or its treatment. A social worker and chaplain can provide short-term counseling and emotional support.

Hospicare offers drop-in bereavement groups and periodic special support groups. These meetings are open to the community and there is no attendance fee, but pre-registration is sometimes required. Bereavement support groups and social opportunities are listed on Hospicare's website at www.hospicare.org. Short-term individual bereavement counseling is also available.

The Hospicare Residence creates a home-like atmosphere with a flexible approach to meeting patient/family needs. Although most services takes place in patients' homes, the Hospicare residence offers a place for people whose caregivers can no longer a care for them or for those who live alone without adequate support or no longer have a home in which to live. Staffing:
  • Hospice medical director is available for consultation if the patient's physician is unable to visit.
  • Two staff members attend to no more than six patients 24 hours a day, assuring that personal care and attention are provided.
  • Volunteers prepare meals and provide companionship.
People in the residence receive the same hospice team services as those who reside at home.

Hospicare's hospice service provides comprehensive home and residential care for terminally ill patients and their families, plus care in area nursing homes and at Cayuga Medical Center. The hospice team includes the patient's physician, a primary nurse/case manager, a social worker, home health aides, a chaplain, volunteers, Hospicare's medical director and a bereavement counselor. Together, the Hospicare team develops an individualized plan of care which provides:
  • pain and symptom control to provide relief from discomfort
  • counseling for the emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and family members
  • respite care and brief in-patient stays for periods of critical need
  • support and education on what to expect for the patient and family
  • personal care services
  • problem-solving help for legal, financial and family issues
  • companionship
  • bereavement support
  • individual and group services
  • grief education materials
Hospicare covers the cost of all medications related to the terminal illness and equipment for the patient's safety and comfort.

The After Trauma (Postvention) program offers:
  • counseling for individuals, families, schools, business and groups affected by a traumatic experience, including suicide
  • consultation for schools, business, groups and individuals on providing support and maintaining safety after a trauma
  • trauma education for dealing with the impact of crisis, trauma and loss
  • support groups for those who have experienced loss through suicide

  • telephone counseling to people experiencing emotional distress, problems of living, crisis situations, suicidal thinking or concern about someone else
  • information and referral to community services and national crisis lines

Callers and counselors remain anonymous to assure privacy. 1-800-273-TALK (8255) from the 607 area code connects the caller with the CRISISLINE of SPCS. Will also connect caller with next nearest crisisline if SPCS unavailable. Callers from other area codes are put in touch with crisis lines serving those area codes. Free and confidential online crisis counseling service for teens and young adults is available from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at ithacacrisis.org.

Survivor Benefits Guide is a web-based resource, which is dedicated to the surviving spouses and dependents of military personnel who died while in active military service and to the survivors of veterans who died after active service. It provides quality information and assistance to family members suffering the loss of their husbands and wives, sons and daughters, and mothers and fathers; additional information specific to death in service issues; and information from other federal agencies and organizations that offer related benefits and services to survivors and dependents.
