Extension Educator
The Family/Parenting Education Program offers an extensive list of workshops: Parenting Skills Workshop Series fosters family communication skills. The eight hands-on, interactive sessions help participants identify ways to use the easy to learn skills: 'encouragement', 'can do', 'choices', 'self-control', and 'respecting feelings'. Parenting Styles workshops explore the cultural values, personal beliefs, and strategies that enable parents to raise competent, capable, and proud children. Participants join in six sessions that complement the Parenting Skills Workshop Series. Parent Education Network provides useful information for parents with toddlers, teens, foster care children, and other caregivers. "Stone Soup" workshops focus on raising children with special social/emotional needs and is advised by local parents. Parenting Skills Facilitated Visits pairs a Parenting Educator to coach one-on-one with parent(s) and child(ren) who are working with the Children's Services Unit. Parenting Educator Facilitator trainings are offered annually to anyone who would like to use the curricula and increase the availability of quality parenting education in our community. The Tompkins County Coalition for Families builds a supportive community for all children and families. An ad-hoc group of organizations and citizens convene monthly for dialogs and action on the Third Thursday morning, 8:30am-9:30am at CCE-Tompkins.

Associate Vice President for Campus Health
Gannett Health Services offers primary care medical services, counseling and psychological services, physical therapy and health education for all full-time registered Cornell students, their spouses and partners. It is also the first-aid station for the entire campus, providing medical care for accidental injuries and illnesses. Gannett also provides specialized services such as:
  • travel and allergy shots
  • physical therapy
  • massage therapy
  • contraception and gynecology
  • HIV/AIDS testing and counseling
Students use Gannett as they would a family physician or counselor.

Cornell employees can use Gannett services to supplement those offered by primary-care providers. The Gannett web site provides information on:

Family and Children's Mental Health Clinic is licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Clinic is a primary treatment resource for children, adolescents and adults. Services include
  • Assessment/referral and short term clinical counseling for EAP
  • Diagnosis, treatment and consultation
  • Psychiatric evaluations for medication
  • Specialized crisis and mental health outreach/support
Special areas of expertise include working with sexual abuse victims and very young children, and mental health consultations to schools, day care centers, and other organizations working with children.

The MHLS provides representation, without charge, to patients in psychiatric hospitals and residents of developmental centers who need legal advice or assistance concerning their institutionalization. Advocacy is provided for individuals in private as well as state operated facilities. The MHLS also serves as appointed legal counsel in Kendra's Law proceedings. The agency also is frequently appointed as court evaluator or legal counsel in guardianship proceedings under Article 81 of the Mental Hygiene Law.
 

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of the Finger Lakes

The National Alliance on Mental Illness, Finger Lakes (NAMI-FL):
  • provides support for families and friends of people with mental illnesses
  • educates on serious mental illness and advocates for the mentally ill and their families
  • advocates for improved services for people with mental illnesses
  • fights stigma
  • supports research to find causes of mental illness and improve treatment
Support groups for family members of people with mental illness meet twice a month. Call for information and location. NAMI-FL offers two workshops: Family to Family, a 12-week course covering information and skills to help family members cope more effectively with relatives with mental illnesses, and Basics, a 6-week course geared specifically to family members of children and adolescents with mental illnesses.

www.MilitaryMentalHealth.org is an online mental health screening tool that provides an anonymous self-assessment for depression, alcohol disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder. Individuals can print the results of their assessments to take with them to a health care provider.
