Parents Apart is a six-hour workshop for parents who want to help their child/children cope with their separation and/or divorce. Certified by the NYS Court System, this workshop is taught by therapists and attorneys and focuses on:
  • children's emotional reactions to their parents' divorce and/or separation
  • how parents can help them adjust
Participants select either two three-hour sessions, 6 pm-9 pm, weeknights, or one six-hour session, 9 am-4 pm with a one-hour break, Saturdays. Registration is confidential. Parents of the same child(ren) are placed in different workshops. 4-H Program Leader
4-H Youth Development creates opportunities for youth to develop skills and practical knowledge. 4-H Clubs are youth groups of five or more led by at least two volunteer leaders, meeting a minimum of six times per year. The focus of 4-H is on developing leadership, public speaking, and teamwork skills through the following programs: Rural Youth Services addresses local youth development needs in nine rural communities through experiential, research based educational opportunities. Programming is offered year-round after school, in-school, evenings and weekends. Youth most in need of positive youth development experiences are identified and recruited. Volunteers on Youth Commissions or Community Councils guide and oversee their local 4-H programs. Urban 4-H offers safe and fun educational activities for diverse youth (ages 5-14) living in urban neighborhoods at Maplewood, Overlook Terrace and Linderman Creek aprtments, and at Belle Sherman Elementary School. Urban 4-H operates during after school hours, September through May, and at summer camp in July and August. Urban 4-H Summer Day Camp at 4-H Acres, Summer Sewing Camp, and various Rural Youth Services camp programs are located in many towns of the county. - Hidden Valley 4-H camp is a residential summer camp in Watkins Glen. The Ithaca Children's Garden provides interdisciplinary, multicultural and intergenerational educational experiences for youth and adults. ICG also offers a community beautification apprentice/job experience (Youth Horticulture Apprentice Program) for teens, ages 14 to 18 during the summer months. 4-H School Enrichment activities are held during the school day and as part of the school curriculum. Title:
Extension Educator
The Family/Parenting Education Program offers an extensive list of workshops: Parenting Skills Workshop Series fosters family communication skills. The eight hands-on, interactive sessions help participants identify ways to use the easy to learn skills: 'encouragement', 'can do', 'choices', 'self-control', and 'respecting feelings'. Parenting Styles workshops explore the cultural values, personal beliefs, and strategies that enable parents to raise competent, capable, and proud children. Participants join in six sessions that complement the Parenting Skills Workshop Series. Parent Education Network provides useful information for parents with toddlers, teens, foster care children, and other caregivers. "Stone Soup" workshops focus on raising children with special social/emotional needs and is advised by local parents. Parenting Skills Facilitated Visits pairs a Parenting Educator to coach one-on-one with parent(s) and child(ren) who are working with the Children's Services Unit. Parenting Educator Facilitator trainings are offered annually to anyone who would like to use the curricula and increase the availability of quality parenting education in our community. The Tompkins County Coalition for Families builds a supportive community for all children and families. An ad-hoc group of organizations and citizens convene monthly for dialogs and action on the Third Thursday morning, 8:30am-9:30am at CCE-Tompkins.
