The Cancer Resource Center's mission is to create a network of support, information and advocacy for all people diagnosed with cancer, and the people who care for them. Staff members and volunteers provide:
  • one to one support by answering questions, listening to concerns and helping clients understand their options
  • trained volunteers may accompany clients to doctor's appointments and treatment sessions
  • support groups
  • boutique with new and used wigs, hats, scarves and post-mastectomy supplies such as prostheses and bras
  • wellness activities such as yoga, retreats, etc.
Volunteers also assist with:

Garden & Yard Work
Occasional Rides
Provide a Meal
Pet Care
Bills & Paper Organization
Other Tasks The Center's resources include:
  • 700-volume lending library of books, tapes, and DVDs on cancer and other health and wellness related topics
  • a regularly updated, comprehensive list of both local and national links as well as resource information about cancer on its website
  • monthly electronic newsletter with updates, links to Internet resources and cancer news
  • Guide to Cancer Support Services in Tompkins County, available in hard copy and online, with resources that may be needed during and after treatment, including information on financial assistance, insurance and legal issues and paying for prescriptions
Medical transportation: Cancer patients going between Ithaca and NYC for medical appointments can sometimes get free rides on the Cornell campus-to-campus bus if seats are available. Arrangements MUST be made through the Cancer Resource Center (277-0960). Financial Counseling and Advocacy Program: trained volunteers help people with cancer and their families with:
  • organizing medical bills and insurance statements
  • identifying resources that might help with medical bills and/or living expenses
  • preparing appeals when insurance claims are denied

The Crisis line provides:
  • telephone counseling to people experiencing emotional distress, problems of living, crisis situations, suicidal thinking or concern about someone else
  • information and referral to community services and national crisis lines

Callers and counselors remain anonymous to assure privacy. 1-800-273-TALK (8255) from the 607 area code connects the caller with the CRISISLINE of SPCS. Will also connect caller with next nearest crisisline if SPCS unavailable. Callers from other area codes are put in touch with crisis lines serving those area codes. Free and confidential online crisis counseling service for teens and young adults is available from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at ithacacrisis.org.
