Family Counseling Ministry

The Family Counseling Ministry has professionally-trained, spiritually-sensitive therapists who provide:
  • free, unlimited consultation to member church clergy
  • non-judgmental, affordable counseling and therapy for individuals, couples, families and groups
  • one free workshop, program or sermon per member church per year
Interpersonal relationships, grief, depression, work-related problems, marriage problems and family issues, e.g., with children or adolescents.

FCM services are available to those associated with member churches. As schedules permit, therapists may choose to see persons not connected with any member church or religious group.
Sponsored by the Susquehanna Association, NY Conference, United Church of Christ (UCC), FCM is supported by 80 churches of many denominations in New York's Southern Tier, Presbytery of the Susquehanna Valley and Geneva Presbytery.

The Finger Lakes Independence Center (FLIC) strives to educate individuals and organizations about their rights and responsibilities and works with them to solve problems of independent living. The Center provides information about eligibility requirements and procedures, explanation of benefits, and independent living skills training. Peer counseling and support groups for people with depression, and socials for individuals with disabilities are also available. FLIC offers free community outreach, speakers, workshops on how to manage chronic health conditions and other topics, and training sessions to develop community awareness of disability issues. Sign language interpreter referrals and American Sign Language classes are offered. FLIC also runs the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program for Medicaid recipients in Tompkins County and provides architectural accessibility consultations and modular ramp installation.

  • telephone counseling to people experiencing emotional distress, problems of living, crisis situations, suicidal thinking or concern about someone else
  • information and referral to community services and national crisis lines

Callers and counselors remain anonymous to assure privacy. 1-800-273-TALK (8255) from the 607 area code connects the caller with the CRISISLINE of SPCS. Will also connect caller with next nearest crisisline if SPCS unavailable. Callers from other area codes are put in touch with crisis lines serving those area codes. Free and confidential online crisis counseling service for teens and young adults is available from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at ithacacrisis.org.

The Adult Clinic provides services to adults in Tompkins County who are affected by any type of mental illness and can be treated on an outpatient basis. The Clinic treats a full range of disorders from situational anxiety and depression to severe mental illness. The Clinic is also designed to address the clinical needs of chronically mentally ill adults. Specialized psychotherapy is provided in both individual, family, and group settings. Education regarding mental illness, its symptoms, prognosis, and treatment is also a strong component of outpatient therapy. Medication Management provides the client with a maximum understanding of medication and its effects, side effects, and role in treatment.

The Forensics program conducts mental health evaluations for the Tompkins County court system. This program also provides counseling and risk assessment to inmates of the Tompkins County Jail. The Sexual Offender Treatment Program, Commitment to Change, Thinking for a Change, Doors (Domestic Offender Re-education) and services to the Day Reporting Center are also provided.

The Mental Health Clinic provides outpatient counseling and community mental health services. Programs within the clinic are: Intake and Assessment, Adult Services, Children and Youth Clinic, Emergency Outreach Services and Forensic Services.
