The Community Education Program:
  • publishes the MHA magazine "States of Mind" three times a year
  • organizes conferences, workshops, speakers, symposia and forums on mental health issues
  • works with the MHA Wellness and Referral Program to collect and supply materials on individuals' request topics for public use
  • offers education on mental health and related issues to individuals, groups, schools and businesses
  • provides wellness and recovery resources to the public including information on mental health professionals and support groups. A list of psychiatrists, therapists, and support groups also is available online.

Family Support Services Coordinator
Family Support Services offers a respite program for families where a mental health diagnosis is present or presumed. A trained parent advocate can accompany parents of children with special needs to meetings, etc. This advocate also works with parents/caregivers/guardians who have a psychiatric diagnosis. Limited case management is provided to coordinate meetings with multiple service providers. Advocacy is offered as needed for parents and children. Socialization and skill building activities for children with/or who have a parent with a diagnosed mental illness is offered. Services are provided to children ages 3-18 years old. Activities may involve visits to museums, parks, movies, gyms, restaurants and/or other venues that foster age-appropriate emotional and social growth. The Parents Support Group meets monthly on the 1st Monday of the month for parents to gain support and receive information, education, support and feedback about children with special needs. Parent empowerment training is also offered through this program.

The Parent Partner Program is an educational and support program for parents, family and loved ones of those with eating disorders. The program consists of two three-hour sessions with opportunities to meet with medical, nutrition and mental health professionals about current eating disorders research and practices.

A support group for parents, siblings and friends of a loved one with an eating disorder, the Eating Disorders Family & Friends Support Network meets:

The group connects by interactive video with families and friends in two other counties for informative dialog and support.

KIDS FIRST is a summer therapeutic recreation program for children and youth unable to attend other mainstream summer programs. Youth learn socialization and behavioral skills as well as having summer fun. Saturday activity and recreational groups, which offer a break for parents, take place during the school year. Trained workers provide positive role models for participants. Eligibility for these programs includes: diagnosis of Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED) or developmental disability; having a parent or primary caregiver with a mental illness diagnosis.

C.R.E.W. (Counseling, Recovery, Empowerment, and Wellness Services) provides mental health services through therapy, support groups and one-on-one consultation. Groups for adults take a strengths-based approach using systems such as Wellness Recovery Action Plan (W.R.A.P.) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (D.B.T.). The new after-school program for children and adolescents will focus on skill building and emotional support.

Established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program provides medical testing and care for specific symptoms and illnesses, including psychological and substance abuse problems, related to exposure at World Trade Center disaster sites.

The program offers services for:
  • responders, workers and volunteers who helped with rescue, recovery and cleanup at the World Trade Center and related sites in New York City
  • survivors who were in the disaster area or lived, worked or attended school there
Services for approved health conditions causing problems include:
  • trouble breathing with wheezing, like asthma
  • inability to perform normal tasks without becoming short of breath
  • requent sinus problems or constant cough
  • frequent nose and throat irritation
  • stress-related illness, anxiety and depression
Care takes place at Clinical Centers of Excellence in the New York Metropolitan area. A nationwide provider network does medical monitoring and treatment for eligible responders and survivors outside the New York City area.
