Hotline advocates provide crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to agencies throughout the country to victims and those calling on victims' behalf. The organization is the federally-designated national communication system (hotline and website) for runaway and homeless youth.

Available 24 hours a day throughout the United States and its territories, the hotline helps youth and family members work through problems and find local help from social service agencies and organizations. Callers to the hotline find someone to talk to; help finding shelter, food, medical care or counseling, and assistance with other issues that may prevent runaways.

Neighborhood Legal Services, also known as Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc., provides legal assistance to low-income individuals in civil cases only (NO criminal cases, NO traffic violations, NO DUI). Legal services can be provided in areas of:
  • public benefits (including public assistance, Social Security, SSI, Food Stamps, Medicaid, unemployment benefits)
  • employment issues
  • housing issues including eviction defense when tenant is in court proceedings or when residents of trailer parks first get notice, homelessness prevention, public housing, subsidized housing. CANNOT HELP WITH SECURITY DEPOSIT ISSUES. INDIVIDUALS WITH SECURITY DEPOSIT ISSUES CAN USE SMALL CLAIMS COURT.
  • Foreclosure services include:
    • representation at settlement conferences
    • foreclosure defenses
    • help getting loan modifications (before or after a foreclosure action has been filed)
    • negotiating with lenders and loan servicers
    • help with short sales
    • help to tenants living in foreclosed properties facing eviction
  • do it yourself divorces in cases of uncontested divorces
  • legal education and advice to community groups; and other non-criminal cases
NLS also provides counsel and advice or brief service without regard to income for senior citizens in Tompkins and Tioga Counties (contact the local OFA for a referral). NLS also provides limited legal services to adult victims of sexual assault. Referrals are made through the Advocacy Center. NLS also welcomes ex-offenders who face re-entry issues (i.e., housing or employment matters) after release from jail or prison. For do-it-yourself divorces, NLS will guide individual through beginning paper work processes, provide legal information and counseling, will help person apply for waiver of fees, etc. Custody issues, as well as support orders, must already be settled and they prefer that whereabouts of spouse is known. DOES NOT ASSIST WITH CUSTODY CASES. NOTE: Chemung County Neighborhood Legal Services is the parent agency for the Tompkins/Tioga program.

The New York State Police provides 24 hour per day, 7 days per week full-spectrum police service to areas of Tompkins County not served by an on-duty, local police department. It also provides investigative, narcotics, forensic and laboratory support to local police agencies upon request. SP Ithaca is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week and there is always someone available to assist you at the front desk. Emergency: Call 911 Tompkins County 911 Center will dispatch the nearest available patrol. Child Sexual Abuse reporting: Child Sexual Abuse is a crime. If you suspect Child Sexual Abuse, contact the New York State Police. We will institute a criminal investigation or refer you to the proper jurisdiction to do so. To report DRUNK DRIVING: Call 911 or SP Ithaca to report a drunk or drugged driver. 1-800 CURB DWI will connecting you with the State Police station nearest the hard-line phone from which you call. ROAD CONDITIONS: Please do not contact us for road and weather conditions. These calls quickly overwhelm our dispatch center during storms and hamper our ability to handle incoming emergencies. For road and weather conditions on the NYS Thruway, call 1-800-THRUWAY. For state-wide road and weather conditions utilize the NYS DOT website at www.nysdot.gov and click on "Winter Travel Advisory". During the winter the AAA furnishes the "Icicle Network" road condition report daily from Dec. 1 through March 15 to radio station WHCU (870 AM). Finally, weather forecasts and storm information is available on numerous websites, such as www.weather.com
