The following services are available: Early Intervention: provides evaluations and appropriate services for children from birth to age 3 with a developmental disability or delay. Child Find: provides developmental screenings and surveillance for children from birth to age 3 who are considered to be at risk for developmental delays. Children with Special Health Care Needs: identifies children with special health care needs with referrals to appropriate agencies and health insurance providers. Healthy Neighborhoods Program, seeks to reduce the burden of housing related illness and injury through a holistic, healthy homes approach. The Health Promotion Program (HPP) informs, educates and empowers people to help prevent disease, maintaining their own health and that of the community. HPP:
  • Promotes health eating, physical activity and avoiding tobacco to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer
  • Advocates for policy, organizational and environmental change to support individual behavior change
  • Partners with local business, media, health providers, schools, legislators and community agencies to achieve these objectives
HPP conducts a Community Health Assessment (CHA) and collaborates with stakeholders to develop and promote a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

Helping Hands Caring Heart, Inc. is a Christian organization that serves pregnant women, single women with young children, single fathers, grandparents, and low-income families by promoting their human dignity; strengthening healthy personal relationships; and empowering them to live independent, productive lives. The organization also strives to network with other churches to provide the most comprehensive services. SERVICES AVAILABLE:
  • Assistance with planning for a child including pregnancy tests, maternity clothes, confidential counseling with information about adoption, and support groups with other pregnant women.
  • Confidential post-abortion counseling and support groups
  • Preparation for a newborn baby including diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, baby food, clothes, furniture, and other nursery items that a family might need help purchasing.
  • A support system for parents of young children. This includes educational materials, parent support groups, confidential counseling, and childrens clothes.
  • A resource for families in crisis situations. This includes referrals and networking to services in our community, confidential counseling, and assisting with important life transitions.
  • Every Friday a therapeutic support group is offered with a licensed social worker.
Donations are accepted at all times- supplies for infants, toddlers, and small children are in high supply.

HOPE FOR BEREAVED provides free support and hope to grieving children, adults and families through one-to-one counseling, support groups, telephone helpline, and HOPELine newsletter. Support group facilitators are trained by HOPE staff and have "lived" the same grief experience. Friends or family members are welcome. Please call before attending any groups.
Current groups include:
  • children 6 or older and teens
  • parent(s) who have lost an infant or child of any age
  • those left behind by a suicide
  • individuals who have lost a parent, relative or friend
  • widows, widowers, engaged and significant others, all ages

Hospicare and Palliative Care Services of Tompkins County provides a hospice program of comprehensive home and residential care for terminally ill patients and their families, as well as palliative care services (pain management) to people with advanced illnesses who may or may not have terminal diagnoses. A team of physicians, nurses, social workers, health aides, and clergy provides palliative physical care to the patient and emotional, psychological and spiritual support to the patient and family members. A certified therapeutic harp practitioner offers complementary therapeutic music to help patients deal with physical and emotional symptoms. Trained volunteers offer respite and companionship, as well as help with chores, errands and transportation. Acupuncturists and volunteer licensed massage therapists also provide support to patients and family members. Financial and legal counseling is provided. Bereavement counseling in the form of individual and group counseling is available to anyone in the community, including children. Hospicare provides education and resources about end-of-life issues, including advance directives and pain and symptom management.

Hospicare offers drop-in bereavement groups and periodic special support groups. These meetings are open to the community and there is no attendance fee, but pre-registration is sometimes required. Bereavement support groups and social opportunities are listed on Hospicare's website at www.hospicare.org. Short-term individual bereavement counseling is also available.

The Hospicare Residence creates a home-like atmosphere with a flexible approach to meeting patient/family needs. Although most services takes place in patients' homes, the Hospicare residence offers a place for people whose caregivers can no longer a care for them or for those who live alone without adequate support or no longer have a home in which to live. Staffing:
  • Hospice medical director is available for consultation if the patient's physician is unable to visit.
  • Two staff members attend to no more than six patients 24 hours a day, assuring that personal care and attention are provided.
  • Volunteers prepare meals and provide companionship.
People in the residence receive the same hospice team services as those who reside at home.
